The fastest way to remove limescale from a showerhead is to soak it in white vinegar for 30 to 60 minutes, then scrub the nozzles and rinse. If the head is badly clogged, a citric acid solution works even better. Either way it takes about an hour, almost all of it waiting.
Limescale is the white, crusty mineral film left behind when hard water dries. It blocks the little spray holes, so the water comes out weak, sideways or in uneven jets. Cleaning it every few months is usually enough to bring back normal pressure.
What do you need to descale a showerhead?
- White distilled vinegar (about one cup), or citric acid powder
- A plastic bag big enough to cover the head, plus a rubber band or zip tie
- An old toothbrush or a soft brush
- A toothpick or pin for stubborn nozzle holes
- A soft cloth
Use only one cleaning product at a time. Never combine vinegar with bleach or any bleach-based cleaner, because the mix releases toxic fumes. If you have used a bleach product in the shower recently, rinse the area well first.
How do you clean a showerhead with vinegar without taking it off?
This is the lazy method, and it works for most fixed heads:
- Fill the plastic bag about halfway with white vinegar.
- Lift the bag so the whole spray face is under the surface, and fasten it around the neck of the showerhead with the rubber band.
- Leave it for 30 to 60 minutes. For heavy buildup you can go a couple of hours.
- Remove the bag, then run the shower on hot for a minute to flush out the loosened scale.
- Rub the nozzles with the toothbrush and poke any holes that are still blocked.
- Wipe the head dry with the cloth.
One warning: vinegar is an acid. Check the manufacturer’s instructions first if your showerhead has a brass, nickel, gold or other delicate finish, because long soaks can dull or mark it. In that case keep the soak short (15 to 20 minutes) or use a mild cleaner made for that finish.
Is it better to remove the showerhead and soak it?
For heavy buildup, yes. Unscrew the head by hand (turn it counterclockwise; wrap a cloth around it and use pliers only if it is stuck), drop it in a bowl of vinegar or hot water with citric acid, and soak it for an hour. Then brush the nozzles, rinse under the tap and screw it back on. If the threads look worn, a few wraps of plumber’s tape on the pipe help seal the connection.
Citric acid (about one to two tablespoons in a cup of hot water) is a good alternative if you dislike the smell of vinegar. Rinse thoroughly afterward either way.
How do you keep limescale from coming back?
You cannot stop hard water from leaving minerals behind, but you can slow it down and make cleaning easier:
- Wipe the spray face with a dry cloth after your last shower of the day.
- Rub the rubber nozzles with your thumb once a week if your head has them.
- Descale every two to three months in hard-water areas, or whenever the spray looks uneven.
- Clean the bathroom surfaces around it at the same time, so scale does not build up on tiles and taps.
If you have tried descaling and the head is still weak, old or cracked, replacement is easy. A handheld high-pressure shower head screws on in place of the old one in a few minutes, with no plumber. It is also marketed with anti-clog nozzles, which suit hard-water homes.

What about the rest of the shower?
The same scale that clogs the nozzles also coats glass, taps and tile. Once the showerhead is sorted, it is easy to do the whole enclosure in one go. A cordless electric spin scrubber saves bending and kneeling on the tub and the lower tiles, and it is waterproof, so you can rinse it under the shower afterward. Always follow the product instructions and keep the cleaning products you use separate.

Quick answers
How often should I clean my showerhead?
Every two to three months is a good rule in hard-water areas, and a couple of times a year in soft-water homes. Clean it sooner if the spray becomes uneven or weak.
Can I use baking soda instead of vinegar?
Baking soda is a mild abrasive, not an acid, so it will not dissolve limescale. It can help scrub away surface grime, but vinegar or citric acid does the actual descaling.
Why is my shower pressure still low after cleaning?
Scale may also be blocking the small filter screen inside the head, or the hose or valve may be partly clogged. If the head is old or damaged, replacing it is usually the quickest fix. Persistent low pressure throughout the house is a job for a plumber.
